A Systematic Search and Evaluation of Nutrition Apps for Kids

In our most recently published study we searched the app marketplace to find nutrition and food-themed apps targeted to children and then evaluated how well the apps aligned with dietary guidance and their quality. We undertook this research because food-themed apps are very popular among children (some have over 89 million downloads!), so it is important to understand what foods and messaging children are being exposed to in these apps. Our research found that most apps feature unhealthy foods (76%). We also found that food-themed games were almost 3 times more likely to feature unhealthy foods compared to apps that were not games. This research highlights that food-themed apps are exposing children to unhealthy foods and a need for better apps to help children learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
