Job Description
Appointment Type: Part-Time

Hours of Work: 35 hours per working week

Salary Range: $40/hour + 14% vacation and benefits

Job Summary: This position involves teaching and research. The successful applicant will teach nutrition lessons to Grade 4 and 4/5 students participating in a research study. The successful applicant will also support research through data collection and data entry during the study. The applicant may be asked to help develop and/or review educational materials related to the project.

Nature of work:

This position reports to Dr. JoAnne Arcand, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

This position will involve providing nutrition education lessons to Grade 4 and 4/5 students as part of an ongoing research study. Each classroom participating in the study will receive a lesson for 5 consecutive days (Monday to Friday) for 35-40 minutes per day. At least two classrooms will participate in the study per week and the teaching component of the study will run for approximately 10 weeks. This position will be compensated for a full week of work during lesson delivery. The successful applicant will be responsible for collecting assent from students, supporting data collection and data entry. This position will require travel to Northern (Fort Frances) and Eastern (Kingston and Renfrew) Ontario with compensation provided for travel time. Travel arrangements and accommodations will be paid for by Dr. Arcand. This position is part-time based on recruitment in the study, where the successful applicant will work full-time hours each week the study is running (35 hrs/week, maximum of 10 weeks) and will not be required to work outside of those weeks. This study will run from October 2023-March 2024 and given the nature of the study, we do not have specific dates at this time for when the study will run. However, the successful applicant will be provided with a minimum of 4 weeks’ notice of when they will be required to work.

Responsibilities/accountabilities:

  • Provide nutrition education lessons to Grade 4 and 4/5 students using the developed lesson plans and standardized operating procedures
  • Collect assent from students to participate in a study
  • Support the study outcome assessor with data collection procedures by ensuring that data collection forms are fully completed by students in the classroom
  • Participate in training to develop a clear and comprehensive understanding of the lesson plans and standardized operating procedures for the study
  • Bring study supplies to the classrooms and ensure all necessary supplies are available prior to the start of each lesson
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students and team members
  • Use time management skills to ensure lesson plans are provided according to schedule
  • Willing to travel to classrooms across Ontario for up to 7 nights at a time
  • Create and critically review educational materials

Required Skills:

  • OCT certification
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Adept in the classroom environment to support student learning
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to multi-task in the classroom environment
  • Knowledge of Google Drive and GSuite software (Google Slides and Google Docs)
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn and use data entry software (e.g., Google Forms, Qualtrics, REDCap)
  • Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Clear Police Record with Vulnerable Sector Check

Required Education:

  • Completion of Bachelor’s in Education (Verification of Academic credentials may be required)

Required Experience:

  • Preferred experience teaching in Junior level classrooms
