Our research in this area evaluates Canadian and international food and nutrition policies and programs. Much of our research has focused on policies related to population-wide dietary sodium reduction, a public health priority globally.

Dietary Sodium Reduction
We have expertise in conducting many different types of studies to evaluate and inform dietary sodium reduction policies and programs. This includes research on behavioural research, monitoring of the food supply, evaluations of food served in public settings (e.g., schools, hospitals) and food labelling. We use both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer research questions.

Program Evaluation

We have conducted several program evaluations for non-governmental organizations such as Heart & Stroke and for the International Development Research Centre. These evaluations seek to understand if outcomes of nutrition-focused programs have met their intended objectives.

Evaluation of nutrition policies internationally
We have examined sodium levels in packaged foods sold in Latin American and Caribbean countries and compared these to the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) regional targets. This research informed revised PAHO/WHO sodium reduction targets, a committee that Dr. Arcand Co-Chaired. Find our results here and here!

Evaluation of other nutrition policies in Canada
In Canada, our research evaluates national nutrition programs and policies. We have conducted research in public institutions. For example, we conducted a large study to assess the levels of sodium and other nutrients in patient menus in health care facilities in Ontario (2012, 2015). We have also examined sodium-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours; evaluation of the accuracy and use of the Nutrition Facts table; use of marketing on packaged foods; and examination of baseline levels and longitudinal changes to sodium and trans fat in Canadian foods (2014, 2020).
