Information for Teachers and Parents

Foodbot Factory was created to help kids learn about food and nutrition in a fun, interactive way! Foodbot Factory was created as a “serious game” which is a video game created for educational purposes. Research shows that serious games are a leading way to engage learners, especially children, in learning new concepts.

What will be learned?
Foodbot Factory contains 5 themed learning modules that are based on Canada’s Food Guide. The modules include: Vegetables and Fruit, Whole Grain Foods, Animal Protein Foods, Plant Protein Foods and Drinks.
The two main characters in Foodbot Factory, Robbie & Rebecca, are scientists who have created Foodbots, which are robots that help people make eating choices. With the guidance of the Foodbots and scientists, kids are led on a fun nutrition adventure through each module where they learn about how foods, and the nutrients within them, influence their health and well-being using interactive activities and mini-games.
Each module includes a combination of engaging content, gameplay and quizzes. The main menu also includes a Food Log where kids can access more information about the foods and beverages they encounter in the game.
What do teachers need to know?
The game has also been designed with classrooms in mind and can help teachers fulfill Grade 4 and 5 Ontario provincial curriculum learning requirements as it teaches kids about Canada’s Food Guide. Canada’s Food Guide is also part of curriculum for this age group in most other provincial curriculum for this age group.
Educational Resources
Lesson plans to help teachers use Foodbot Factory in their classrooms have been created. These lesson plans expand on the learning objectives in each module of Foodbot Factory and provide teachers with classroom activities and resources to assist them in educating their students about Canada’s Food Guide. They also contain additional content about the features of Foodbot Factory and background information on nutrition. Lesson plans will soon be available on our website – check back soon!
What research have we conducted with Foodbot Factory?
Our team has conducted several research studies to ensure that Foodbot Factory is both fun for kids and helps them learn about healthy eating! Currently, we are conducting a study across Ontario that will help us understand the impacts of the Foodbot Factory game and lesson plans on children’s nutrition knowledge.
